Where is Your Heart…? Jesus of Nazareth, God the Son, God's appointed Savior never minced wasted spillage. Errythang He spit has madd relevance for us today, jus az it did two millennia ago. Cuz He is tha Living Word, His Written Word is empowered through His Holy Spirit to reach deep into our heartz and minds, transforming rebels like us into builders and subjects of God's Kingdom. Yo Jesus spit one trak dat checkz me erry time I peep it: "For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also." Luke 12:34 Mang! That cutz deep. But, what kinda Science iz Jesus' droppin' here, anywayz? Let's step to tha hard one first—the "heart." In Jesus' day, many peeps thought that the heart, not the brain, wuz the seat of intelligence and learning, as well az emotionz an' feelin'z. It wuz thought dat tha heart wuz the center of a kat'z core identity, hiz character, his soul. Furthermore, tha heart wuz also considered tha seat of desire. Yo, we feel dis even today. Check tha sayin': "…heart set on…," az in: "Sun got hiz heart set on goin' to Rapfest again, this August." (True. lol) So, itz wit tha heart dat peeps emotionally attach to something and/or someone. No problemo. Itz how we be built. We made in God's Image. An' God iz coo wit us valuin'—treasurin'--fam an' tha good thangz in life He gives us. He only trips when peeps value an' treasure thoz created thangs mo' than they Creator. U see, God not only created us in His Image, but created us for His pleasure, and to enjoy…Him…forever. Yo, when any created thang—inanimate or animate, object or creature--displaces God the Creator as the Object of desire in a peep's heart, dat iz noooooo good. Tha Bible uses a strong word for dat wackness: idolatry. Back in Jesus' day, katz who didn't believe in the One True God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob worshiped idols—inanimate statues or tangible, physical representations of other "gods." While dat ain't az common in tha U. S. of A, today, it still iz in many partz of tha world. So, we in America don't really have to worry about "idolatry" right? We in tha 21st Century, not tha 1st Century. It'z no big deal, right…? Yo, peep dis jawn by Jesus*: "The land of a rich man was very productive. And, he began reasoning to himself, saying, ‘What shall I do, since I have no place to store my crops?' Then he said, ‘This is what I will do: I will tear down my barns and build larger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods. And, I will say to my soul, "Soul, you have many goods laid up for many years to come; take your ease, eat, drink, and be merry."' But God said to him, ‘You fool! This very night your soul is required of you; and now who will own what you have prepared?" So is th e man who stores up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God." (my italics). Luke 12:16-21Check it: "…productive…" Yo, no kat in our "success-oriented" US of A iz buggin about "productivity" are they? Mang! Don't dat sound 21st Century?! An' nobody iz ill buildin' barnz an' storin' up goodz, are they? Hmm…I wonder how may dope cribz an rimmed out whipz tha average mulit-platinum rapper gotz these dayz. Yo, do babies an' young'unz still go hungry in our barrioz an' hood'z…? "Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also." That's tha check, fam. Jesus is sayin' dat if we love, honor, adore any created object, our heart is there. An' that'z aiight, az long az dat love, honor, adore don't morph into…worship… When dat happens, we value tha created thang mo' than tha Creator, an we be idolatorz jus like any 1st Century—or 21st Century peeps for that matter, who bow down to junk made of paper, wood, stone, gold or silver. Even "aspirations," "dreams," "goals," "careers," "relationships," are idols, if they have or usurp the place that God should have in a katz life. Again, it'z nooooo good. So, does dat mean we gotta lose all our possessions, relationships, etc., i.e. "sell it all and give to tha poor…?" It all depends on how God be speakin' to U, right now. Fo' some readin' dis spillage, God may want dem to bust som movez along thez linez, or at least "be content wit such az you have." Fo' others, God may have use of them an' tha thangs—tangible or intangible—dat he haz given to them. Yo, katz like Abraham, Daniel, an' David were rich in material possessions and relationships. Yet, all they heartz were right B 4 God. He worked mightily thru all o' dem. Why? Cuz, they set they heartz upon God so strongly, az tha first and only Real Object of worship an' devotion--az they Treasure--dat all they possessions couldn't draw they heartz away from Him. In dat sense, they "lost" all they possessions. An, I'm feelin' dat Jesus want'z us to lose—or "lose"--our treasures in jus dat same way. Jesus wantz us to put Hisself and His "aspirations," "dreams," "goals," "careers," "relationships" for us in tha treasury of our hearts. Check it: "For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it; but whoever loses his life for My sake will find it." Mt. 16:25 I'm out. Peace. ONE sun John 3:30 |
