I would like to interview a former gang member who carried and used guns on the street. I can disguise this person’s identity to keep him out of trouble with the law. These would be long interviews, taking in the person’s entire life story, not just his gun-life story. The point is to show how guns fit into the person’s life, and how they were important to him. Last year, I ghostwrote a book for a former Washington, DC, drug dealer who taught me a lot about the meaning of guns in DC street life. (Mostly, it was a matter of language. This guy was in a lot of gunfights, but hardly anybody was ever hit. The point was to use the noise and the flash and the whizz of the bullets to make a statement. That's how it was form him, in DC, in the nineties, anyway.) That book was his, and this one is mine, so I am looking for someone who lived by the gun as a criminal and now has some distance and perspective and a willingness to talk about it frankly. It’s no small request. This is what it would involve: I’d travel to where this person lives and we’d sit down for several long interviews. I’d be asking this person about his entire life story -- where and how he was raised, what his parents did for a living, how he got started in the life, and so on. We’d talk about his whole life, not just his gun life -- family, school, jobs, girlfriends, the works. It gets pretty deep. If you email me a mailing address, I'll send you a copy of my most recent book, Nine Lives: Death and Life in New Orleans, which traces the life stories of nine real New Orleanians from 1965 up through Katrina. What I have in mind for this gun book is similar -- very close-up portraits of real people’s lives. I will tell you up front that there’s no money in it for the interviewee, and that this would take a fair amount of time and effort on his part -- these interviews can be long, and sometimes painful. And here’s how I protect the people I interview: I send them all my notes about them -- our interviews, my interviews with others, and everything else. Everybody has the chance to look it all over and find any errors, any misinterpretations, anything I didn’t get quite right. This also gives people a chance to excise anything they didn’t want in the book -- any stories they were sorry they told me, anything they said they wish they hadn’t. I am not a gotcha journalist. These are their stories, and I’d aim to tell it the way they want it told. What the feelings are like in the beginning compared to what they're like later on... What the daily life is like for someone who just joins a gang? I mean to the detail, from waking up, until bedtime. I would like to collaborate with someone with the first hand knowledge of an LA gang member. I would like to develop a down and dirty story and make it into a dramatic, important film. I am a filmmaker in Los Angeles and would love to speak with someone soon regarding this. My idea is a very raw portrayal of one young kid's experience from the moment being jumped in a gang until the end of his first day as a gang member. To show what's real, intimate and emotional.
