I try to make class interesting for them, and I try to cut them some slack with their language, because they swear the way I used to when I was in the military. When I hear a word I don't like, I holler "Language!" and someone typically hollers back "Sorry, sir!" and I'm cool with that, so it ends there. Really, what more do we need? Some of the kids in my classes appreciate my efforts to connect with them, and I got kids who, after failing a math class and maybe even an entire grade, are now scoring an A in math for the first time in maybe eight years. You know, I tell them about a friend of mine. We worked in a warehouse together a few years back. He used to bang, and one day realized it was not a smart way to go, so he dropped his colors, changed his attitude (attitude will make you, and attitude will break you - take a hint!), got a job, started going to church, and moved deep into the turf of a rival gang. Nobody there knows him, he started life over again, and now all his former homeys are either dead, doing time, or did the same thing he did and got out of their gang. When they tell you repping their colors is for life, that's only true if you're stupid enough to stay in your gang until you die (violently). Think about that. When it comes right down to it, all your death means to them is they have a reason to smoke a blunt and drink a forty. The next day, they'll be drinking and smoking for some other reason. You can get out, now. You can change your life. You can do well in school, you can get a job, you can have a family. If you feel a long way from God, guess who moved! God is right where He has been since He began time. They tell you to laugh now, cry later, and they got that right. You had better laugh now, because if you keep repping and keep your distance from God, you **** well WILL be crying later. True, I'm a middle-aged white guy who's never been in a gang. Now, tell me that what I wrote here about banging and about changing your life isn't true. God wants you home with Him, where you belong. You want to rep something, try repping Jesus. He hung on a cross for you, you mean way more to Him than just a reason to smoke a blunt and drink a forty.
